El Paso Leadership Academy East (EPLA East) is a departure from the middle schools and high schools of ye olden days of the 20th century. The first thing you notice is our extraordinary school building which we intentionally designed because we are redesigning education and want our building -and our ideas- to reflect that.
We Build, We Lead
EPLA East is serious about teaching our scholars how to lead in the 21st century. We built our coworking campus to include an incredibly beautiful open space. We’ve created a leadership and entrepreneurship curriculum where you learn how to collaborate, assign roles, delegate, and work together as a team. As an adult you’re expected to work in groups – in both college and the business world – so here at our small public school, we teach you how.
At our tuition-free public middle and high school we believe that scholars learn best when they get what they want: freedom and autonomy. Scholars are given objectives to complete, and when they finish, they are given appropriate freedoms: catching up on homework, moving ahead in class, or just taking a break. By earning these choices, our scholars learn accountability, self-actualization, and independent thinking- all indications of a great leader.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Guess what? Our scholars are all amazing, unique individuals and thankfully no two are the same! Our forward-thinking education at EPLA East reflects this as our small, close-knit school can develop individualized education to meet our scholars’ needs. Some scholars might need to catch up to grade level while others want to accelerate beyond their class. EPLA East can accommodate everyone. Our engaging teachers and staff connect daily with our scholars, not only to review academic progress but check in with their social and emotional needs, too.
A 21st Century School
We intentionally designed our school’s campus to reflect how we teach. This state-of-the-art building is modern and airy and full of fun places our scholars want to be. They want to be here where they know that when they’re done with an assignment early, they can go hang out and catch up on homework, riff in our music studio, or catch up on Rocket League in our esports lab.
An example of how purposeful our design is? Our high school anchors the ground floor so our middle school scholars walk by their role models every day as they head up to their classes on the second floor. They see high school in action, inspiring them to set up good study habits now so one day they will be a part of a team leading a project in the open-air atrium downstairs. It’s not all business though- there’s a slide connecting the upper floor with the ground level to give our scholars a little adrenaline boost as they wind down.
