Not only is Coach Ochoa our Physical Education teacher at El Paso Leadership Academy (EPLA) East, she’s also a planner, so naturally she’s involved in a few school activities, including our Party Planning Committee AND our new Dean of Operations! We make sure to have a good time every day at our small tuition-free public school, but sometimes, it’s fun to go all out and plan a celebration. Whistle optional. Sports puns mandatory.
What do you love about EPLA East? What sets it apart from other schools?
I love teaching at EPLA East because I get to work alongside other individuals with the same passion to reshape and create a better future for all students.
What do you love most about your role? What is the most challenging?
Providing support and mentorship to our students has been one of the most rewarding and challenging parts of teaching. It has made me understand and empathize with other perspectives and visions of life.
Are you involved in other activities at EPLA East other than teaching?
Yes, I am part of the Party Planning Committee and the National Junior Honors Society (NJHS) Committee. As a party planner, our role is to organize and create decorations for the various events that occur at school. With NJHS, I help the advisors with the selection of candidates to join the program and brainstorm ideas for how to be part be involved in the community.
In your opinion, what makes a great leader? How do you teach leadership?
EPLA East is a place without discrepancies to language, social status, location or narrative. It is in this environment that ideas are not only fostered but cultivated into positive change. It is through this change that leaders are empowered and ethics are created.
When you’re not engaging with our EPLA East community, what do you like to do?
When I am out of the classroom I go horseback riding with my horse Milagro. It is the best way to clear my mind and get some fresh air.
